Some historical landmarks...

1935 : The first iron ore deposits were located in the Kedia d'Idjill (the iron mountain), in Northern Mauritania..

1948 : First field study for potential mining.

1952 : Founding of the Mauritanian Company of Iron Mines (MIFERMA / Société des Mines de Fer de Mauritanie) and launching of prospecting and construction.

1963 : Beginning of the working of the mine. The first ship loaded with Mauritanian ore left Nouadhibou.

1974 : MIFERMA was nationalized. The Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) took over.

1984 : A production of high grade ores obtained through an upgrading of the low grade magnetic ores extracted from the Guelb El Rhein was added to the high grade ore production of the Kedia d'Idjill.

1987 : The M'Haoudat deposit, 60 km to the North East of Zouerate, was first localized.

1991 : The TO 14 deposit to the South East of the Kedia d'Idjill was first localized and mined.

1994 : Inauguration of the M'Haoudat deposit..

1997 : SNIM went across the line of the 300 million tonnes sold ever since 1963.

The total marketable iron ore capacity now amounts to 12 Mt per year.
