On 25th October 2001, SNIM signed an agreement for a joint venture with the Australian company SPHERE INVESTMENTS Ltd with the aim of valorising magnetite deposits at Guelb El Aouj.

SNIM has mining titles to these deposits, which are located some 40 km north-west of Zouerate. The reserves are estimated at 500 million tons.
