Inauguration of SNIM’s wind power plant

Nouadhibou, March 14th, 2012: Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) inaugurated the first wind power plant in Mauritania. The President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, launched the plant’s entry into service.

With installed capacity of about 4,5MW, the 16-generator wind farm was built entirely using SNIM’s equity, for EUR7.8 million. "The start-up of this innovative and pioneering project and the installation of a solar power plant of 3MW in Zouerate in the coming months will firmly establish SNIM in the era of renewable energies," said the Director and CEO of SNIM, Mohamed Abdellahi Ould Oudaâ.

Mr. Ould Oudaâ also mentioned the projects and the strategic development framework set up by SNIM with the aim of doubling its commercial production by 2018 and thus strengthening its position as a major socioeconomic player in Mauritania.

He said that investment in renewables was a strong commitment by SNIM to:

  • keep abreast of technological changes in the field
  • develop a pioneering experience it can share with the rest of the country
  • create value from potential wind and solar energy within its scope of operation
  • cover a portion of its energy needs using a stable source
  • limit the impact of changes in oil product prices on its cost structure
  • limit the impact of its operations on the environment.
